Recently, I had the opportunity to ask a trusted advisor about data center location. I said, "If you were going to build a new data center today, where would you build it?" This was the first reply, "I know where I wouldn't build one: In the downtown area of any city." - Director of Tech Services, global investment bank. This was in reference to the Christmas 2020 bombing of the AT&T regional interchange, which is still affecting users at the bank. This morning, there was another incident with a fiber cut in Brooklyn. The cut is also impacting Google, Zoom, Gmail, AWS, YouTube, Google Classroom, Robinhood, Slack and dozens of other web services. When will we stop putting data center capital in major metro areas?
